The Fourth Wave of Urbanization in China

Since 1949, China has experienced different stages of urbanization. The economic reform and open door policy in 1978, in particular, has profound impacts on the pace and mode of urbanization in China. There are four major waves of urbanization in China, each has its characteristics and impacts. China is now in the fourth wave of rapid urbanization. Through the analysis of the four waves of urbanization in China, we will be able to have a better understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing Chinese cities.
